QUERY: noun - 1. a formal question addressed to an official or an organization. 2. a request for information from a database, used to extract specific data from a complex network of hidden tables.
In ancient times, seekers traveled to the temple at Delphi to consult the Pythia, a mystic who sat above a chasm of vapors, speaking the cryptic, fragmented words of Apollo.
The Oracle held the absolute truth, but she never gave straight answers; her prophecies required intense interpretation, and to misread her taxonomy was to court ruin.
For over a year, NetSuite was my Delphi. It was a monolithic, all-knowing engine containing the company’s entire product truth, yet it was walled off from me behind a barrier of corporate bureaucracy and second-hand access.
To build our print marketing and onboard our legacy dealers, I could not query the Oracle directly. Instead, I had to act as an outside scholar, gathering scattered whispers of data from sales reps and intermediaries, using them to spin my own Ariadne’s Thread: The Master Google Sheet
Then, the administrative heavens shifted, and the barriers fell. I was finally granted direct access to NetSuite... handed the keys to the adyton, but left standing alone in the dark with neither guide nor map.
The thread severed. The labyrinth awaits....
"I know that I know nothing."
- SocratesEx Uno, Plures
NetSuite had been the mysterious omphalos stone of our company since my arrival.
Ex Uno, Plures: Latin - "out of one, many".
NetSuite operates as a singular, unified source of corporate truth: a massive relational database where every product, price level, inventory count, and customer record exists in a centralized state of absolute certainty.
Yet, this singular truth is never viewed all at once. Instead, through the mechanism of Saved Searches and customized reports, that lone source material undergoes a process of fragmentation. One single database, when queried, fractures into many distinct realities: a financial ledger for the accountants, a logistics map for the warehouse, and a product catalog for marketing.
To navigate this landscape is to understand that a single entry can speak a hundred different languages depending on the supplicant who asks the question.
Before a supplicant could look upon the inner sanctum of Delphi, they had to walk the Sacred Way: a steep, winding path lined with the grand treasuries of rival city-states, each presenting a different, fragmented piece of the Greek world.
My approach to NetSuite began in this same state of humble ignorance, walking a path paved by those who came before me.
Valken had lost its most experienced NetSuite elders before my arrival, leaving a fragmented priesthood behind. The remaining department heads... sales, accounting, purchasing... knew just enough to perform their daily rituals, but none held a complete map of the kingdom.
To piece together the broader landscape, I began to query these department heads, interviewing them on how they navigated the platform and what outputs and parameters were available to them.
Our purchaser was the most advanced NetSuite user but was an isolated oracle of their own, stationed out-of-state, entirely out of arm's reach. Forced into isolation, I had to begin conducting my own small system queries, falling back on the familiar taxonomy I had been mapping inside my Master Google Sheet.
I started exactly where I had started on day one: the Product SKU.
Using the SKU as my baseline anchor, I experimented with creating custom reports, testing the numerous data filters available, watching how the tables connected, shifted, and responded.
I did not yet know how to pull the complex answers needed to run our entire digital marketing operation... but by mapping the system's core logic against my own spreadsheet blueprint, I learned something far more valuable.
The question was the answer... the query.
Because I didn't know what the system couldn't do, I began asking questions the company had never considered.
The ritual learned. The question asked...
ΓΝΩΘΙ ΣΕΑΥΤΟΝ
Valken did have a digital presence, but it was cut off from NetSuite.
ΓΝΩΘΙ ΣΕΑΥΤΟΝ: Greek - "Know Thyself".
The Castalian Spring was the sacred water source of Delphi. Located in a ravine at the base of Mount Parnassus, it served as the mandatory ritual purification point for every pilgrim seeking divine prophecy.
Just as the ancient pilgrim washed away the dust of the road to approach the temple with pure intent, I had to strip away my corporate assumptions in order to uncover the true boundaries of our digital domain... stepping blindly into the raw architecture of NetSuite with a single foundational question:
What was done before?
Much like the forensic investigation that opened Chapter 2, "Peeling Back the Layers", I began an archeological dig through years of dormant digital campaigns. The company's previous digital manager had relied on Klaviyo, working out of static, external lists entirely severed from a live connection to the ERP. Yet, deep within NetSuite's labyrinth, the ghosts of older, native database campaigns still remained.
To map our true digital footprint, I cross-referenced our active B2B dealer database against these legacy customer segments, alongside a loosely managed, sales-run Dealer Facebook Group that we had done art for. This synthesis yielded a vital starting cohort: a reliable focus group of dealers to pilot the next generation of our email and social media marketing.
Recalling the operational strategy from Chapter 1, "Whatever It Takes", I coded this primary segment in NetSuite under the name "Beachhead." Just as the original Beachhead folder in Dropbox had served as the foundational bedrock to rebuild our physical marketing infrastructure, this digital Beachhead segment would now serve as the structural anchor to launch our new digital campaigns.
The Art Department had been making occasional social media graphics for the previous digital marketing leads since my arrival.
To truly master our digital domain, I turned to our front lines... the sales team... to uncover how they successfully moved our B2B dealers to action within the digital aether. These reps were my Hosioi: the elite guardians of the raw truth, standing at the edge of the Castalian Spring where the company meets the customer.
At Delphi, the Hosioi would sprinkle cold water from the Spring onto the sacrificial beast; only if the animal shivered from the sudden chill did they know the god Apollo was present and the path forward was clear. When I consulted our sales team, I looked for that same visceral reaction and was told that it was not in our polished marketing assets, but in their raw, personal text messages with core dealer segments that yielded the highest engagement... far surpassing the last few years of corporate email campaigns.
The client response was the shiver in the cold water. It was the undeniable sign that the divine spark was here, in the unvarnished immediacy of text. This revelation sparked a defining question... the ultimate query:
Can we weaponize text communication at scale inside our NetSuite ERP?
I delved into the platform's history and found a subtle clue within one of the customer records indicating that the accounting department had previously done something akin to what I intended... but I needed someone with greater NetSuite access and knowledge to confirm.
Simultaneously, I audited our historical email metrics, tracking the three highest-performing historical campaigns. The data revealed a clear pattern: success rested entirely on custom-built, responsive email templates that allowed dealers to bypass friction and click directly through to products.
While I knew that I could create these templates, guidance was needed to ensure that our digital missives would translate correctly upon sending.
Leveraging the qualitative aesthetic audits of our B2B clients that I had already quantified within my Master Google Sheet, I began engineering highly tailored, hyper-segmented email matrices.
Just as I had transformed our physical marketing language, our digital communication would no longer be dismissed as cold, automated corporate noise; it would speak directly to our dealers in their native aesthetic tongue.
I implemented the same aethetic segmentation across all marketing channels.
By the end of my immersion, I knew Valken's true digital self. I knew the operational capabilities for automated omnichannel marketing existed and had worked before. But I also possessed a secret weapon previous marketing leads lacked: the ability to hand-code fluid, table-based HTML email templates.
The raw power was there; it just required a translator.
The question asked. The answer to be deciphered...
"The lord whose oracle is at Delphi neither speaks nor conceals, but gives a sign."
- HeraclitusRáðumst Rúnar
My time standing by at the gates of NetSuite were over.
Ráðumst Rúnar: Old Norse - "Let us decipher the runes".
Runes were never mere letters; they were cryptic, potent symbols that remained completely silent to the uninitiated. To read them required deep lore, acute pattern recognition, and a refusal to look at information in a silo. While I had the latter two qualities in spades, I still lacked the first and most important... The Lore.
My vitki in this ritual was our company’s purchaser, as he was the closest entity we had to a living archive... possessing the deepest functional memory of how the system actually breathed. He would act as a rune-carver, an interpreter, a Pythia.
Together, we began a digital cleromancy: casting our questions into the deep, dark backend of the ERP, scattering raw data logs and dormant code onto our screens like wooden slips on a white cloth. I brought three core theories to this divination ritual. I needed his unique perspective on our custom filters and reports to interpret what the gods of the system were trying to tell us.
The First Rune: Ansuz - The Messenger
My first theory was born from a fragment of historical evidence. I discovered that the Accounting department had previously bypassed traditional workflows by attaching image files of physical receipts to customer cell numbers. Crucially, these messages were routed so that the sender ID matched the customer's dedicated sales representative.
We cast our eyes over the communication logs to decode this anomaly, unspooling the hidden script behind it.
The text message marketing allowed us to reach dealers who traditionally did not respond to email campaigns and gave us a way around social media algorithmic penalties.
Ansuz is the rune of the "god-mouth"... the vessel for unexpected messages. By deciphering its digital footprint, we proved that NetSuite could be leveraged for hyper-personalized B2B text marketing.
Instead of blasting clients from a cold, automated corporate number, our marketing broadcasts could now mimic direct, individual outreach from their trusted sales rep.
The Second Rune: Kenaz - The Torch
The second query was a matter of infrastructure and authentication. I knew I possessed the technical ability to hand-code bespoke HTML email templates directly within NetSuite’s marketing module. However, the system's internal oracle was blind to our external media assets. The images within the code would display as broken links upon delivery.
To bridge this gap, I needed the purchaser’s deep administrative permissions to reconfigure our digital boundaries. We examined the system’s domain settings to correctly map our DNS records.
I was able to build custom email templates that could be used in both product heavy layouts and single-product focused eBlasts.
In Norse tradition, Kenaz represents the controlled fire of the forge or a blazing torch carried into a dark cave. It is the rune of the craftsman, the engineer, and the creator. It doesn't just mean "light"... it specifically represents making things visible, bringing clarity to what was hidden, and ensuring things take their proper shape in reality.
Kenaz is the rune used when an artist brings a mental vision into physical reality. By resolving the hosting and authentication issues, we lit the torch, allowing the email clients to finally "see" and render our marketing assets exactly as intended.
The Third Rune: Thurisaz - The Awakening Giant
Our final divination involved resurrecting dead code. Hidden within the reporting module lay a series of dormant custom filters, long forgotten by everyone at Valken. Like a sleeping giant, these filters were capable of cross-referencing multi-layered customer behavior, but they sat idle, gathering digital dust.
With the purchaser’s knowledge of historical buying cycles, we shattered this stagnation and breathed life back into the code.
In Norse lore, Thurisaz represents a catalyst for change, a defensive thorn, or a giant shattering barriers. Crucially, it is the rune of breaking through resistance and awakening dormant forces. By successfully building tailored customer reports that combined historical, seasonal purchase patterns with specific geographical and digital touchpoints we awoke a sleeping giant within our NetSuite.
This transformed our entire strategy.
We stopped relying on speculative, broad-market guesses. Instead, Thurisaz granted us the power to launch highly proactive, targeted campaigns aimed precisely at the segments most likely to convert.
Galdr
Like ancient diviners staining wood with pigment to awaken its power, we systematically isolated these dormant scripts, fed them test data, and watched how they bled into our workflows. Line by line, we mapped out the hidden automated logic that dictated inventory, pricing, and fulfillment... like a galdr, the Old Norse term for a magical chant, spell, or incantation.
By learning to read these digital runes, we unlocked the forgotten capabilities of our own system, turning a dead ERP graveyard into the living, predictive engine needed to fuel our eCommerce website and digital marketing ecosystem.
The answer deciphered. The message to be spread...
𓄡𓆑𓏏 𓊹 (Heft-Neter)
In ancient Greek, pneuma translates to "breath," "wind," or "spirit," but at Delphi, it specifically referred to the sacred geological vapors that rose from a chasm in the earth into the adyton.
𓄡𓆑𓏏 𓊹 : Egyptian - "Divine Nod".
In the desert oasis of Siwa, the gods did not speak in words; they spoke through weight and motion. During the oracular procession, priests hoisted the massive, ornate sacred ship of Ammon-Zeus onto their shoulders. When a supplicant stepped forward with a question, the priests did not deliberate. Instead, through a synchronized, intuitive swaying... a collective leaning into the shared weight of the vessel... the ship would move forward or backward.
This unified physical momentum was the Heft-Neter: the manifestation of the divine will, the "Divine Nod" that dictated the path forward. No single priest could steer it; it required absolute alignment to translate the god's unseen breath.. it's pneuma... into physical direction.
In our corporate ecosystem, I stepped into the role of the Cheriheb... the Lector Priest and ritual coordinator. I was no longer a mere supplicant begging the ERP for data... I was the master scribe chanting the exact programmatic syntax to animate our digital sanctuary.
While we had recently onboarded a new Head of Social Media, out-of-state geography and lack of direct NetSuite access kept them hovering on the threshold of the temple gates (something that I keenly understood). Therefore the responsibility of translating our collective marketing pneuma into systemic reality fell entirely to me.
I stood at the center of the altar, setting up and triggering every single campaign for physical mail, email, SMS, and social media.
To execute the liturgy, I relied on our Wabu... the pure, essential bark-bearers of the operation. My junior designers, the out-of-state social media lead, and the front-line sales teams became the collective muscle, hoisting the weight of our strategy onto their shoulders. By ingesting real-time, front-line intelligence from our regional sales reps and remote managers, I could read the momentum of the market and direct our bearers to shift in unison.
The Synergy Ritual
The Grounding: Before a single byte of digital data was transmitted, the ritual began in the physical realm. This point-of-purchase (POP) poster was shipped directly to the brick-and-mortar storefronts of our dealer network. This wasn’t just for merchandising assistance and decoration... it was a deliberate visual anchor. It established the aesthetic baseline and planted the psychological seed of availability directly on the retail floor, ensuring that when the shop owners looked at their shelves, the visual cue of our product was already top-of-mind.
The Confluence: The moment the physical print touched the field, the digital liturgy was activated to collapse the distance between awareness and the cash register. We didn't allow the campaign to grow cold; instead, we triggered a precise cross-channel echo. By utilizing the exact same graphical assets across both private conversational channels and massive public feeds, we created an inescapable omnipresence.
We had built the marketing department back up on physical marketing and still used it to propel other channels whenever possible.
The Influence: While the SMS channel operated as a private, high-conversion whisper directly to the business owner, the social media broadcast acted as the public trumpet. By blasting the "Back in Stock" creative to the end-consumer retail market, we intentionally stoked consumer demand. When local players began demanding the product in-store the dealer's own social media platforms, the dealer... who had just received the personalized text from their sales rep... felt the immediate, urgent pressure to either call their rep or log into our Dealer Site and buy.
The Lean: The destination of the entire procession was the B2B portal. When the dealer finally clicked through the trackable link in their SMS text or typed in the web address, the ritual concluded with absolute continuity. The massive homepage banner mirrored the exact visual language they had seen on their phone, on their social feeds, and on their shop walls. The friction of the purchase was entirely erased; the data had successfully guided the supplicant from a passing thought to a completed bulk order.
We were able to still give the Dealers a high-touch experience either by phone or website, or a combination of the two.
We were no longer beholden to the desert winds to carry our messages blindly across the dunes; we had learned to command the waters of the Nile, layering our rituals with the absolute precision of a pharaonic liturgy, completely revitalizing the flatlined email marketing channel, shattering industry benchmarks and pushing click-through rates deep into the high 50 percentiles among our tech-resistant B2B demographic... and out on the public digital frontier, our heavily restricted social media platforms defied the platform throttles entirely, surging by a massive 40% within an 18-month window.
Just as the ancient pneuma rose from the depths of Delphi to carry the voice of Apollo, this newly unlocked NetSuite access became my divine vapor. By channeling its raw ERP capabilities, I could finally breathe targeted messaging through the digital aether, allowing our brand to speak directly to fragmented customer segments with prophetic precision.
The message spread. A Croesian Prophecy cast...
"Then I began to thrive and wisdom gain, to grow and wax full wise; each word led me on to another word, each deed to another deed."
- The Hávamál (Stanza 141)Epliogue
The true test of an oracle is not the beauty of the prophecy, but its absolute accuracy when the dust settles. To command a market as heavily throttled as ours... where algorithmic gates constantly labeled our paintball and airsoft lines as "firearms-adjacent"... required something far deeper than conventional marketing playbooks. It required the systematic orchestration of every single channel under a singular, unified vision.
We forced a stubborn, tech-hesitant market to sway precisely to our rhythm. By anchoring our strategy in highly tailored physical print and localized point-of-purchase (POP) retail support, we broke through buyer resistance and successfully onboarded a staggering 93.3% of our legacy B2B customer base onto our modern eCommerce portal.
Where digital walls blocked us, our proprietary NetSuite SMS system became our ultimate workaround... whispering directly to our accounts and yielding an engagement rate that ranked as the second-highest revenue driver in the entire company, falling only behind direct phone calls from the field reps themselves.
I was no longer just managing a database or pushing pixels on a screen. By weaving the technical logic of NetSuite with human field intelligence and multi-layered creative storytelling, the fractured corporate ecosystem had healed into a singular, high-converting organism.
Unfortunately the daimones of fate are often fickle.
The Oracle warned King Croesus that crossing the Halys River in a quest for rapid expansion would lead to ruin... saying "a great empire will fall".
Valken had unfortunately comitted the same error: rapid expansion within turbulent times. Long before the final ledger was closed, the silent arrival of Nosos had already weakened the palace walls, quietly unseating the visionary leadership required to navigate a crisis. When the borders finally shifted, we were met not by an enemy we could outmaneuver, but by the choking fog of Penia... a sudden, artificial tightening of trade and economic winds that spooked our operational machinery like Cyrus's camels on the plains of Thymbra.
In the end, the Delphic prophecy held true. A great empire did indeed fall... it just happened to be our own.
More tales await those who ask...
